IT Consultant

As an IT consultant, you’ll begin with organization and process analysis, planning, and project management for information technology projects.

  • Communication:Communication is the act of conveying information to others. As a IT consultant, you may be communicating with clients, other IT professionals and other stakeholders. Effective communication is essential to your success as a consultant because it allows you to convey complex information in a way that others can understand.
  • Problem-solving:Problem-solving skills allow you to identify issues, develop solutions and implement those solutions. As a IT consultant, you may be called upon to solve a variety of problems, from computer issues to network issues to software issues. Your ability to identify the problem, research potential solutions and implement the best solution can help you be an effective IT consultant.
  • Research:As a consultant, you may be required to research solutions to client problems. This may involve researching software, hardware or other solutions to a problem. Your research skills can help you find the best solution for your client.
  • Time management:Time management is the ability to complete tasks within a certain time frame. As a IT consultant, you may have multiple projects going on at the same time. Having good time management skills can help you prioritize your work and ensure you complete all your tasks in a timely manner.
  • Teamwork:As an IT consultant, you work with many different people throughout the day. You may be working with a team of other IT consultants, a team of developers or a team of business leaders. Regardless of the team you’re working with, you need to be able to work well with others. This means you need to be a team player who can communicate effectively, share ideas and work together to find solutions to problems.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing technical solutions to problems, including developing computer applications, writing code, and debugging programs
  • Communicating with clients about project status and providing updates on work progress
  • Evaluating new technologies and recommending new tools for use by the company
  • Designing, developing, testing, documenting, and supporting computer systems and applications
  • Supporting existing applications by updating programming codes, maintaining databases, and troubleshooting bugs
  • Providing technical support to users who have questions about hardware or software applications
  • Maintaining information security by monitoring network usage, recommending software upgrades, and installing security patches on servers
  • Performing technical research to identify new technologies that will benefit the company
  • Providing training to employees who will be using new applications or systems
